Why A1c can mislead
A1c depends on red blood cells and how long they live. Anemia, recent blood loss or transfusion, pregnancy, kidney disease and certain inherited hemoglobin variants can push the number up or down independently of actual glucose control. In those situations, clinicians lean more on direct glucose measurements.
